OCRC Report: Awareness of asbestos hazards in schools, asbestos management plans and training among Ontario school custodial workers

Asbestos was historically used in many public buildings in Canada, including schools. Over time, asbestos-containing materials can deteriorate and this places many workers at risk of exposure – particularly those who work in proximity to these materials. Custodial workers in schools have been identified as at-risk for potential exposure to asbestos during routine housekeeping or maintenance work. Little is known about how asbestos is managed in schools. This report summarizes the findings from an evaluation of Ontario custodial workers’ awareness of asbestos management in schools.

This study was requested and funded by the Prevention Division of the Ontario Ministry of Labour. It was completed in collaboration with researchers at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.
