Mesothelioma cases in Ontario continue to rise

The OCRC and Cancer Care Ontario have prepared an Ontario Cancer Fact that describes the number of new cases of mesothelioma in Ontario between 1981 and 2012. Mesothelioma is a rare but highly fatal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Though asbestos use peaked in the 1960s and 1970s and has declined since then, the number of new cases of mesothelioma continues to rise due to its long latency period. The number of new cases is expected to plateau and decline based on the pattern of decreased asbestos use, but it is difficult to predict when this will happen.
