The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has launched the World Cancer Report 2014, a collaborative report that describes many aspects of cancer research and control. One of the major findings of the report is that the burden of cancer is rapidly growing, and a greater focus on developing and implementing effective prevention strategies is needed to address this rise.
According to the report, health promotion is an important part of effective prevention strategies, but is not sufficient. Adequate legislation is needed to reduce exposure and risk behaviours. IARC notes that legislation limiting exposure to occupational and environmental carcinogens is an important area of investigation for prevention strategies to reduce the global burden of cancer.
The report has been released in time for World Cancer Day 2014, which takes place on February 4.
